Adding to Practice to Make It Fun

How can a student be motivated to practice more? If you're a singer and take voice lessons, sing along with your favorite songs on your phone. Try harmonizing where there is no harmony. Sing in the shower, the car etc...Try to work on getting comfortable with the lowest notes in your range, then try to carefully sing a little higher than you normally do. Experiment with your voice's different sounds.

A drum student can buy a practice pad that is portable and virtually quiet. Just like the voice student, a drum student can put on head phones and play along with their favorite songs outside of drum lessons. Keeping the basic rythhm is most important, then you can learn to throw in fills.

Piano is great for coming up with things you know by ear. Piano lessons will help with tecnique and reading. Remember, piano is set up logically and like voice and drums, it's easy to get great sounds out of instantly.

Studying guitar and violin can be more challenging because stringed instruments can be more complicated to learn. Creating on those instruments can be equally as fun, though. Learn easy famous guitar riffs: Smoke on the Water, Satisfaction etc... It will make your studies more fun and improve your dexterity.

Remember, you will need a good teacher and a balance between what is expected technically and what you like and do on the side. A good teacher will allow both. The technical end is mandatory but the fun things you add on at home will hold your interest!
