Finding a Great Music Teacher

A great music teacher will insist the student become a good note reader. Reading builds technique while learning this world-wide language. However, reading the entire lesson can lead to boredom. This teacher should incorporate scales and other techniques, as well.

With guitar students, I like to incorporate little guitar hooks by classic bands like The Beatles, The Stones, Led Zeppelin etc. I also encourage guitar students to bring music they like and teach them a little something from that song (full songs eventually.)

Great drum teachers use metronomes and require rudiment studies. They also teach various drum beats and patterns. This will better hold the student's attention and is necessary for growth.

Great voice teachers start with warmups, incorporate reading, range improvement etc... Pitch control, diction and breathing are all crucial for a great singer.

A great teacher will create a well-rounded student, period! A teacher that is impressive will also communicate with parents. I bring parents in the last 5 minutes of a lesson so they know what the guitar lesson is for that week. A great teacher will go beyond by sometimes reaching out between lessons to share something or just ask how it's going. By the way, It is ok to make requests. After all, you're spending good money for this service!
