Flying Hands Music School in Louisville, Kentucky

Making Money in the Music Biz

July 1, 2016

There are many paths you can take as a musician. For instance, I recently got a call to record a version of The Ballad Of Jesse James for a podcast that has many listeners. For those of you who don't know, Flying Hands was also a production company at one time, so I'm familiar with this type of request. On the way to record, I began to feel the excitement I used to get when doing this kind of work. It's creative and fun!

When considering production, you have to cater to the client. In this case, the customer wanted a mournful version, so I laid down an acoustic chord and melody part with slide guitar and harmonica as accents. Simplicity was also part of the request. There were no vocals, bass, drums, etc. The other challenge was for it to be exactly 90 seconds but with a 60 second version. To fulfill this request, I set a metronome so the arrangement would be exactly the right length, and by stroke of luck stopping at 60 seconds into what was recorded worked, as well.

Besides getting paid for your recording, you should also consider how you'll be recognized. For me, I made sure part of the deal was getting my name mentioned every time the song is played.
