Personal Gear

October 10, 2016

The more you really morph into a musician, the more your gear plays an important role. My picks, strings, guitars, etc. all constantly evolve. I currently use nylon picks because of their warmth and speed. I don't use typical string gauges. I tend to use heaver strings for the treble 3 and lighter for bass 3. I use Fender Strats, Gibson Hollowbody's, Godin Nylon guitars & Taylor acoustics ALL because of the specific tones they project. The same goes for amp choices. Even my amp settings are consistent.

Singers use different mics and reverb settings, but it really comes down to their voice and how they they use it. For violin, a player may use a wood bow or choose a carbon fiber one. A drummer may prefer a steel snare or a wooden one, for instance. (Believe it or not, concrete snares are now available.) There are grand pianos, upright pianos and many, many varying keyboards with the different sounds. The point is, you'll eventually learn your preferences, but they may continue to evolve over time.

Check out our next post, where I'll cover how varying gear is used for different musical styles.
