Music Tips for Success

February 19, 2013

If you are or think you're becoming a serious musician, there are some things to think about. First of all, whether it's guitar, bass, drums or voice, you should try to master your main passion. There are very, very few people who master multiple instruments. Singing and playing an instrument is common. Yet again, very few people are equally matched between the two. Learn to read music! Not only does it help to be able to sight-read when necessary, but it will develop better technique. If you play guitar, bass, piano, drums or even sing, you should study as many styles of music as possible. Take everything you learn, even if it's small, and build it into your own "voice." Classical builds technique, Jazz builds chord knowledge and improvisation. Odd time signatures (5/4 for example) make you think outside the box. Bluegrass players are amazingly fast. Blues probably has more feeling than just about any other form of music. Study, learn, compose and, most importantly, develop your ear so you can hear changes in music just by listening. Stretch yourself!
